Latvian Black Bread Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 cups rye flour
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 cup white flour
- 2 cups warm water
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp molasses
- 2 tsp active dry yeast
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 10 minutes until frothy.
- Add rye flour, whole wheat flour, white flour, salt, and molasses. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 190°C.
- Shape the dough into a loaf and place it in a greased loaf pan.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
- Let cool before slicing.
